Meri Merino

Seville-based artist with a very special approach. She studies primitive and simple figurative forms based on very colourful scenes.

How would you describe your art?

I start from a very naïve aesthetic, with flat colours and simplified forms. I'm interested in spontaneous painting, without previous sketches, primitive.

What does inspire you?

I try to find inspiration on social media, following other artists' work whom I feel identify with. From my art, from the way I develop myself in that childish world, I started to work as a teacher, and it is in the students' results where I find the best source of inspiration. Their authenticity and purism awaken ideas that the adults could never reach.

What is being a woman for you?

From my own experience, one of the most beautiful things I've got. It's a very powerful gift that allows us to change the present to have a better future.

What do you celebrate about being a woman?

My body, my cycle, the beauty we all women breed. I think we're creating a new narrative where female bodies interact with each other, sharing personal experiences and talking about subjects that have been muted for a very long time.

How do you feel about being a woman in the art industry?

There is obvious male relevance that must be overcome if we want to build an equitable society. Fortunately, the present demands a series of guidelines that imply that a feminine, queer, racial, etc. presence is needed.

I think there is a very strong connection between female talent, there is immense support and a community that materialises in opportunities and collaborations that empower us and give us visibility.
