Marta Zubieta

Spanish artist based in the UK whose work is based in the surreal and dream world. Through pastel colours, she mixed critical themes with cartoon characters, creating a very special aesthetic.

She is also a musician, being the singer of the psychedelic-cumbia band XAMAN X, based in Bristol.

How would you describe your art?

I explore the millennial culture and its issues through pink-tinted glasses, neon colours and dreamy characters.

What does inspire you?

I got inspired by 90s cartoons, sci-fi films, pop-surrealist art and Latin folklore to create adult illustrations for forever teenagers.

I do also work with subjects that have an impact on our daily life: capitalism, social media or the planet.

What is being a woman for you?

Being a woman is a gift because we are the creative nature in its pure essence. Women involve creation if we look back to the roots, to the matriarchy societies before the contamination of religion or the system itself.

What do you celebrate about being a woman?

rivals anymore, we are sisters. I celebrate that we have no barriers to share our feelings and that really helps our personal construction as human beings.

How do you feel about being a woman in the art industry?

It’s a good moment because minority groups have been supported more than ever. Although I feel there’s a barrier in street art because it's still male-dominated, I personally see how new tools are rising to change that.
